green fuse contemporary funerals was founded and is run by Jane Morrell and Simon Smith, who have worked as funeral directors, arrangers, advisers and conductors since 1999 and are authors of We Need To Talk About The Funeral - 101 Practical Ways To Commemorate And Celebrate A Life, a guide based on their work with families.
green fuse began as a vision to bring people into ceremonies, marking the passages of life through the beauty of the flower. Our shop in Totnes sold flowers and plants, and between those were coffins and information about ceremonies. What surprised us most was the need for funeral ceremonies; our customers would come in and say that someone has died, and what should they do next?
Over the last few years we have developed from giving funeral advice to become funeral directors, specialising in distinctive and contemporary funerals.

Helping families with funerals is now our main work – and it is our passion. There is much that can be done to reclaim something from a difficult and sad time; for families to come together and face death, to perform rituals which give events a sense of meaning, to perform rituals which give events a sense of meaning. To approach the funeral with a sense of creativity and participation can be transformative and inspiring. We believe this is incredibly important, and that the funeral director can provide a family not only with practical help, but also with spiritual and emotional support to make the choices that make the funeral exactly what they want it to be.
Jane’s and Simon’s passion for improving family’s experiences of funerals is rooted in their own personal experiences of the deaths of close family members. Jane was stopped from attending her father’s funeral when she was ten, which has had an enormous impact on her life, and when Simon’s wife died in her early forties he needed to arrange a funeral for her. Jane trained in nursing and horticulture, and in funeral celebrancy with Welfare State International. Simon’s careers have included being a professional trainer, coach and leadership consultant. They also founded and run the New Bereavement & Funeral Trust (www.nbft.org.uk), a registered charity, which trains health, social and bereavement care professionals to inform and support patients and families with funerals at the time they need it.
