A good funeral helps the bereaved redeem something from their loss and begin the process of grieving. It is important that a funeral will be an occasion remembered well because it reflected the life and character of the deceased.

• brings comfort to those who are left behind.

You may want a largely traditional funeral - the experience of it can be transformed by simple things, like the intimacy of the eulogy, the choice of flowers or decoration on the coffin, a chance to go up to the coffin to say last goodbyes, the lighting and snuffing of candles or time to reflect or talk about the person who has died.
Or you may want a wildly or not so wildly unconventional funeral, where the family has more participation, perhaps transport the body or carry out other duties of the funeral directors yourselves, hold the ceremony in a different place from the cremation or burial such as in a function room or at home, choose favourite non-funereal words and songs, have a woodland burial or scatter the ashes in a special place.
